Field Agent & Process Server Training (Mercantile Agents)
4-minute read
What Do Field Agents & Process Servers Do?
Field agents, also known as mercantile or commercial agents, perform a wide range of in-person duties on behalf of credit providers, lenders, commercial clients and legal service providers. These include face-to-face debt collection, repossessions, skip tracing, and process serving. In some cases, they also verify identities, assess assets, or deliver urgent legal documents in accordance with state and federal laws.
Many experienced agents come from careers in law enforcement, investigations, financial services, or business administration.
However, the industry is also welcoming a growing number of new entrants from diverse career backgrounds. Whether you're entering the industry for the first time or seeking a change from office-based work, Beebox Training supports your journey with ASIC-aligned onboarding and annual continuing professional development (CPD), ensuring you're compliant, confident, and ready to work.
Key Responsibilities of Field Agents & Process Servers
Field agents and process servers carry out a range of in-person tasks that require professionalism, accuracy, and a strong working knowledge of legal and compliance requirements.
Conduct field visits on behalf of credit providers, lenders, or commercial clients
Collect overdue payments through face-to-face contact
Repossess secured goods and return them to the creditor
Verify identity and confirm occupancy at residential or business addresses
Serve legal documents in line with legislative requirements
Conduct field calls for asset verification and customer identification
Perform skip tracing (location inquiries) for customers and property
Inspect, photograph, or report on assets and other property items
Identify signs of consumer vulnerability or financial hardship
Engage with customers respectfully while complying with all relevant state and federal laws
Some agents in remote or regional areas may also be appointed as Bailiffs or Sheriff's Officers — in which case impartiality between roles is critical.
Why Do Field Agents Need Annual Training?
Field agents and process servers who work for credit providers or law firms must stay current with changing legislation, ethical obligations, and industry standards. This includes agents performing duties under an Australian Credit Licence.
Annual continuing professional development (CPD) is mandated to meet expectations under ASIC Regulatory Guide 206 and, where applicable, the Banking Code of Practice. Ongoing training also supports compliance with client service level agreements and helps agents manage risks in the field.
Whether you're new to the role or have years of experience, CPD reinforces your knowledge, keeps your skills sharp, and ensures you're prepared to handle sensitive situations professionally and in accordance with the law.
